Message from the Director

Thank you for your interest in the educational programs in the field of Public Health Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology (PICO). Ophthalmic Technician Course (OTC) was the first and only course initiated in 1994 in a single room at Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar. Over the years PICO underwent many changes and transformed from a donor dependable project to a more sustainable department within the Health sector and now running five different graduate and postgraduate courses. PICO was given a status of an autonomous institute in 2010, under the Medical & Health Institutions and Regulation of Health Care Services Ordinance 2002 & now Medical Teaching Institutions (MTI) Reform Act of 2015, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. PICO combines excellence in research and teaching and learning in all its undergraduate and post graduate study programs. All PICO  courses are based on rich and diverse curricula, which provide experiences that will challenge individuals, inspire ambition and develop the character and mind-set needed for success in the fields of Community Ophthalmology, General Public Health and Optometry. In 2017, 05 years Doctor of Optometry (OD) course started with the approval of Khyber Medical University.

All the educational programs at PICO offers students opportunities to learn in this unique environment and to participate In a variety of exciting PICO initiatives including eye camps, school screening programs, participation in scientific conferences, celebration in World Sight Day & World Glaucoma Week.
